During 20120 energy related CO2 emissions declined by 5.7% in businesses but increased by 6.2% in the residential sector – effectively balancing each other due to the work-from-home switch.  Transport emissions fell by 26.5% which resulted in the overall 11.4% reduction in total CO2 emissions.

However, from 2021 onwards Ireland appears well on the way to pre-pandemic levels – a lot more work and action is required.

GHP believes that substantial additional government support is required to support businesses to implement energy efficiency actions – especially as the Government has implemented substantial Carbon Tax increases and is benefitting massively from increased VAT returns due to the huge energy price rises.

At the very least the business sector should be able to easily tap into grants and subsidies funded from the carbon taxes they contribute – as opposed to these taxes being spent elsewhere – Business representation bodies should be shouting loudly for this approach.  Why can I not hear them?
