I attended the Hotel, Restaurant and Catering 2020 show in London recently and wanted to share a few products I saw there, which support excellent environmental sustainability.  Whilst events have overtaken the sector some of these should be in your Action Plans for implementation when you emerge.

Castle Chafer – I met Jim Kearney where he showed me his new Very Low Power Electric Chafing Unit – if you’re buying green electricity then they operate as zero carbon, as well as permanently reducing your chafing dish costs ? anybody using gels, especially at breakfast, should upgrade as soon as possible.

Damien Caldwell was next, many of you would know him from his previous employment. He now has his own hospitality supplies company – Bespoke Hospitality Supplies. My eye was drawn to his great waste bin dividers – they will fit most round bins ? they can be ordered online through the GHP Online Shop shortly.

With Coronavirus on the agenda the Mechline HYGENIKX+ really drew me in – this will constantly sanitise all food production surfaces on a 24/7 basis for only a few hundred euro – what an excellent message to give your clients ? ?We sanitise all food production (kitchens) at all times (It kills Norovirus so will do the same for Coronavirus)?. Linked with our GREENClean non-toxic cleaning service hospitality managers can deliver a powerful message to customers about the safety of their premises – in all areas.  Stephens Catering are Mechline Distributors in Ireland.

I also met Martin Kiely of Food Waste Solutions with his new Food waste digester – the ECODYGER –  it can handle up to 50 tonnes of general food waste annually (The average Irish Hotel throws away 50 tonnes annually), saves money and reduces the carbon footprint associated with food waste collections – the end output is pretty close to compost – up to 90% volume reduction – he has a Pay as you Save leasing model available.

The last thing to attract my attention was the ZYPHO shower drain heat recovery units – what a smart way to steal some heat from hot water going down the drain! Ideal for new builds and upgrading of leisure centre showers – or any showers where there is regular high use.
