Waste Separation – Guide to Good Practice in Guest Bedrooms
The 3 Bin Solution
When reviewing waste separation in hotels two areas stand out as centres for waste
contamination – this is where wastes are mixed and then end up in the Residual
(Landfill) bin.
These 2 areas are
– Accommodation
– Kitchens (Mainly food waste contaminating recyclable waste)
The solution, as always, rests with good management and proper planning and
execution to maximise separation. This guide for bedroom waste separation is designed to maximise waste separation.
Accommodation providers should also understand that Residual waste disposal costs
are c. 3 times more expensive than Recyclable waste disposal costs – so maximising
separation reduces costs
The primary approach to waste management is not to create the waste in the first place.
However, it is a fact of life that we, and our customers, create waste, so the secondary
approach is to ensure that it is separated properly so that it can be recovered by our
waste collectors.
Waste in Guest Bedrooms generally falls into 3 categories.
– Recyclables
– Sanitary & Residual
– Food & TCMF (Tea & Coffee Making Facilities)
Therefore, there should be a 3-Bin solution, and your customers should be made aware of them and how to use them. And……make it easy for them to make the right choice!
And…. make it easy for staff to keep the separation going when they clean the rooms.
The current approach is not working, and to continue the same approach expecting a
different result, is poor management.
So, what are we currently doing…….and how can we change it…..
